Summer is a great time to make wine.

With the summer months upon us and the heat off the scale, especially here in Tulsa Oklahoma, many homebrewers take a vacation from brewing beer. Why? Well, warmer temps mean warmer fermentation which leads to fruity esters and off-flavors. So what’s a lonely fermenting bucket to do? Make wine!

Wine yeasts have a much larger temperature range and can tolerate anywhere between 65°-85° without creating any funny flavors that can hurt wine. As long as you are keeping the wine in a constant temperature range, you can make great tasting wine all year long.

For homebrewers that are sad to see their brewing equipment languishing away in the corner, wine uses the same fermenting equipment. Admit it, you like a good wine on occasion. Wouldn’t you like to say the wine you are drinking is your own label? Make a nice dry red for the wine lovers or mix it with soda to make a wine cooler for your friends that prefer a sweeter option.

So you ask, “What wine should I make?” Well, make a wine you like to drink! Choose a four-week wine kit and you could be drinking the fruits of your labor before it’s time to shut down the pool. For a drinkable wine ready to consume right away choose from the sweet and/or light bodied wines. They age much faster than six or eight week kits.

Not in a hurry but still want to keep those fermenters working? Go for one of the six-week kits and make a wine that will be ready to share with friends for the holidays. An eight-week kit can age for next summer’s fun. Whatever your desire, there is a kit to fit your needs.

So don’t let summer heat ruin your favorite hobby. Expand into winemaking and ferment the whole year round!

Cheers!
