New Glarus Yokel. I wish it was local.
I’m sitting at the dinner table drinking a New Glarus Yokel. New Glarus describes their beer as a whole beer straight from the tanks smooth unfiltered and without pretense. Wisconsin, German and England barleys and the finest Bavarian hops combine in classic German brewing methods. They go on to say, “Expect this beer to be comfortable, crisp and slightly cloudy. Enjoy our salute to every guy who finished his game and left the kids quarters on the table. Remember Buy Local, Drink Yokel.”
If only buying local meant I was buying New Glarus. I love this brewery. Everything they make is wonderful and world class. My mouth waters at just the mention of their beers. But alas, I live in Oklahoma and the only way I can get New Glarus beers is by bribing friends that are going to be in New Glarus territory to bring me back whatever they can carry.
Last week I had my one bottle of Organic Revolution that my friend Chris Bryant brought back a month or so ago. I’m trying very hard to make the selection he brought me last awhile. My first impulse was to drink them all within a few days but then the withdrawals would have been too much, so I showed an incredible amount of restraint if I don’t say so myself.
The Organic Revolution was an incredibly good beer. Next time I’m getting a six pack instead of just one. It is rich and malty with the perfect amount of hops to go with it. Yum, yum, yum.
The Yokel is very similar and measures up to their description. The aroma bursts with malt and hops. The color is a golden straw color and the one I’m sipping is very clear, especially for an unfiltered lager. When I poured this beer, my first thought was, “How refreshing!” The grainy malt backbone is rich and German noble hops add a perfect spicy balance. The carbonation adds a carbonic bite that complements the crisp dry finish. What a wonderful beer.
If you are ever in Wisconsin or are having friends going there, pick up some New Glarus and support this Brewery that is dedicated to quality over quantity. If you live in Wisconsin, please drink local.
